There are few places in the world that make us think we are on another planet. Certainly the White and Black Desert in Egypt is one of these places. Located about 400 km from Cairo in the western desert of the country, they are ideal for a trip of generally 2 days and 1 night or 3
days and 2 nights. The trip starts aboard a minivan that leaves from the main Egyptian cities, which takes about 6 hours. The road itself is a great attraction, traveling through the Sahara desert scenery is a unique experience. The first stop is at the Bahariya Oasis, which, like most oases, was formed from a depression in the relief, which reached a water table and made the water emerge in the middle of the desert, forming a paradisiacal setting. It is possible to bathe in the thermal waters formed, with temperatures that can reach over 40°C, providing a feeling of relaxation for any traveler.
After visiting the Oasis, it's time to exchange the minivan for a 4x4 towards the Black Desert. Upon arrival, the landscape is breathtaking. It's hard to believe that we're on Planet Earth and not Mars. Unlike the Sahara desert stereotypes where dunes and lots of sand are imagined, the Black Desert is actually formed from volcanic material originating from eruptions that occurred about 180 million years ago. You can climb most of the mountains and enjoy unique views that take your breath away.
We continue the journey through the Agabat Valley where we can stop at Crystal Mountain, a geological formation that actually comprises a small mound shaped like crystals and stalactites, something impressive to observe in the middle of the desert. Our path then finally reaches the White Desert! Arrival takes place at dusk, which provides a beautiful view of the sunset, but the most special is yet to come: as night falls, in the middle of the desert isolated from any construction, you can see the starry sky, providing an unparalleled view.
The White Desert is perfect for camping, so tents are set up while a fire is lit and we have a unique dinner, in the middle of the desert, in the moonlight, warmed by the fire. Suitable for being together with friends or getting to know the stories of other travelers. After spending the night in the desert in this picturesque setting, it's time to dawn and realize the grandeur of the White Desert all around. If the Black Desert looks like Mars, the White Desert gives us the impression of being on the moon. Impressive are the rocks formed in this place that thousands of years ago was at the bottom of the sea. Many rocks look like images like mushrooms, animals and even a sphinx. Let your imagination and creativity flourish once you're watching the desert!
Then it's time to head back to the starting destination again, passing through the incredible scenery of the desert road. An amazing and not so traditional trip that should definitely be experienced when in Egypt!
