EL Fayoum, the biggest oasis in Egypt, is a wonder of nature. Famous since the pharaonic era as a spot for relaxing it is one the most well-known oasis in Egypt and a great destination. It’s the closest Oasis from Cairo and the Nile, which makes it easy to access coming from the Egyptian capital and many other big cities.

The most popular activity to do in EL Fayoum is to relax around Lake Qarun, a place surrounded by green areas in agricultural land. Around the lake are located many resorts and hotels where it is possible to spend time and rest. The most famous one is the Auberge du Lac, a luxury hotel nowadays, which was originally built as a hunting lodge for Egypt's last king, King Farouk.

During the Middle Kingdom of Egypt the EL Fayoum desert was also an important political center in Egypt, which made the area have intense progress when compared to other oases. As a consequence many temples were located around and some of them are still remaining until nowadays, making EL Fayoum an important archeological site as well. The most important is Qasr Qarun, a temple dedicated to the deity Sobek, represented by the figure of a crocodile, an animal present in the oasis many years ago.

Moreover, you can find 4 pyramids around the location, the first 3 of them, the pyramids at Lahun, Lisht, and Hawara are in not good conditions nowadays, once the technique for building the pyramids during the New Kingdom was not well developed. On the other side the pyramid of Meidum is still preserved and impresses the visitors.

EL Fayoum is a unique spot in Egypt that is surely worth the visit. Take advantage of some days to rest in an oasis in the middle of the Sahara, an unforgettable experience!
